Surprise Cookies!

Hello Dog Mom's!

I wasn't planning on making do cookies today, but I thought I would share this with you. I was making some human peanut butter cookies and had extra batter. I could have made the whole batch, put some of in the fridge to make later, or make dog treats. Rose and Indy's frequent trips into the kitchen to see what I was doing made the choice pretty easy. Here is how I turned human cookies into dog treats.

First, I will give you the recipe that I used to make peanut butter cookies. This is an egg free recipe so please realize that these treats will taste very peanut butter heavy. The texture will not be like a normal cookie either so be aware of that as well.

3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies (HUMANS ONLY)
Image may contain: water

1 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter (can sub chunky)
1 Cup Flour (sub the kind you like as needed)
1 Cup Sugar ( I do not like all of this sugar so I cut in half)

Mix together in a bowl and roll into small balls. Place on cookie sheet and bake in the over at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Check around 5 minutes to see if the cookies are browning.
Image may contain: food and water             Image may contain: food              Image may contain: food

This will make 12 cookies

Optional Step:
After cooking, quickly place 1  peanut butter cup or heresy kiss on top of cookie for added flavor.

********************************************************************

Dog Treat:

Since I had left over batter, and I didn't use much sugar I felt I could go ahead and make the dogs their cookies. Since you already have batter,  you will not have to make anymore unless you want. I did put in another spoonful of peanut butter.

*Recipe above with one more heaping spoonful of peanut butter
* 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce

Mix all ingredients together until forms a ball. You may need to add more flour if needed.

Once mixed, separate the mixture into 12 equal size balls, and flatten like a pancake. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in the over at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Check at 8 minutes to see if cookie is becoming brown.

This will make about 12 cookies. More or less depending on how big you want to make the cookies. The mixture and cookies will look similar. Don't forget to keep the dog and human treats separated.

It's kind of fun that you can get both human and dog treats out of one starting recipe. Keep in mind that not all treats are appropriate for every dog. Follow your vet's advice. If you aren't sure, do not feed it to your pet.

Dog Treat Results!

Hello Modern Dog Moms!

After I made the video on how to make the treats yesterday, I forgot to post the results. Today, I am going to link the site for you to view the video showing the end results of the products. I hope you enjoyed this because I had a lot of fun trying these out. The dogs had a lot of fun eating these as you can see! There is a special guest spot done by Indy!

As always, remember that you need to consult your vet anytime that you are making treats. Your dogs may have allergies or are sensitive to certain foods. You may have to adjust these recipes to make them for your dog, or you may not be able to use them at all. I am not a vet, and if you don't know if these will cause a reaction for your dog, do not make these treats. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Follow the link posted below which will take you to the Modern Dog Mom's Facebook page. You will see the results video posted. Thanks!!

Rosie Blog: Day 1

Rose's Mommy went out of town for a few days so I am taking care of her myself and with her big brother, Indy the Lab. She is having a hard time without her Mommy so here is her adventures. Rose is a pretty fun dog, and she has a lot of spunk! Here are here logs...

Rose's Blog: Dog Date, Day One:

Rose's Mommy left for a few days yesterday. However, she left without saying goodbye to her in an attempt to make the whole thing less stressful for the dog. Rose ran around the house and cried for 4 hours. Rose then laid down on the couch in a pile of sadness. That sadness didn't last forever and it soon turned into pure puppy rage!

In the middle of the night, Rose kicked open my half closed door and trotted into the room. She jumped on my bed where she proceeded to kick Indy's butt!! She then gave up on life and finally wen to sleep. When I got up for the morning, I go to the bathroom. (Hey, I'm human and everyone goes!) Rose stayed in bed but Indy always follows me everywhere. All of a sudden, puppy rage kicks in and she, the little 7 pound puppy, kicks open the bathroom door and walks into the room and stared us both down! She then let out the loudest bark I have ever heard and took off running down the hall. Only to come back a few moments later, lean in and look into the room, give me the stink eye, and leave again.

I then took Rose outside to do her own business. She trotted up to the fence to do what she needed to do! However, I try to keep her away from the fence because the neighbors (who are very nice) have 5 dogs and I don't want Rosie to get into any sort of trouble. Rose doesn't like that rule and her little body turns very heavy when she wants to do what she wants to do. She lugs me over to the fence and does her thing...but we can see the neighbor's dogs watching us through the windows. They are barking, but Rose does the international symbol for, "what are you going to do about it, bro?" Then the dogs stop barking while she gives them the evil eyed star down. Rose waits several more moments before breaking the stare and allows me to take her inside the house where she  demanded food, and to play with her ball.

Rose just participated in her very first Snap Chat with Mommy, and Mommy's friends. (The people that she likes to bark at on the phone.) She did a good job, but her rage shined through! She misses her Mommy and is taking it out on everyone. Currently, she has exhausted herself so much that she is finally sleeping!

More to come later, but the first few hours has been a challenge. Rose is a strong pup, and she will have many adventures to come in the following days!

Banana Treats Two Ways

Hello Modern Dog Parents! Today, I have not one, but two recipes for you today. Unfortunately, I lost most of the photos that I was going to use to show you the step by step process so you will have to use your imagination a bit. The first recipe is for puppy ice cream, and the second is for doggy cookies.

If you want to make both at once like I did, I encourage you to make a bigger batch to start with. Just leave out the flour and add that later when you are ready to start the cookies.

What you need to make both items:

Ripe Bananas 2 or 3
Oatmeal
Flour
Plastic or Dixie Cups
Bowl
Spoon
Peanut Butter, Creamy or Chunky
Plastic Wrap
Rolling Pin
Cookie Cutter
Cookie Sheet

Puppy Ice Cream:

Ripe Bananas: At least 2
Peanut Butter: Up to one cup
Oatmeal: Up to one cup

First, peel bananas and mush up. I recommend cutting the bananas and then mushing them up in the bowl. Add in the oatmeal, and stir. Next, mix in the peanut butter 1/2 a cup at a time because you may not want to use the whole amount. This is a personal preference but the more you use, the bigger batch it will make,
After you stir the ingredients together, get your cups and place them close to your work station. Fill the cups half way full of your mixture and pack it down. You can make several cups with the recipe depending on the size of the cups you are using. I would not use a cup bigger than the size that you would use in the bathroom.
Once you have filled your cups, cover the tops with plastic. Place in your freezer for at least an hour or longer depending on your freezer.  These treats will keep for awhile, but I wouldn't have them around longer than a month. This is a great treat for those hot summer days.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Treats:

Ripe Bananas: At least 1
Peanut Butter: Up to one cup
Oatmeal: Up to one cup
Flour: Up to two cups

The base of this recipe is the same as the Puppy Ice Cream above. Follow the same steps to prep but slowly add in your flour. Mix the flour in until it starts to stick together to form a dough ball. I suggest that you get your hands in there and mix because you will be able to feel when it is strong enough to start using cookie cutters.
Dust your work area lightly with flour and use a rolling pin to flatten out your dough ball.Choose a cookie cutter and cut out several cookies. This recipe should be enough to make 2 dozen medium sized dog treats.
Place a non stick pan, or non stick sheet and cook in the stove at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Check your cookies at the 7 minute mark. The end result is going to be slightly crunchy. The thinner the cookie, the more crunchy it will be.

If you have left over dough, you can always bag it up to use at a later time. However, since there are bananas, you can't keep this stored for very long without using the dough. It will go bad if you don't use it up within a few days. These are very popular treats and very well liked in my household.

I hope you enjoy these as much as Indy and Rose did!!

*As always, if you are worried about allergies, check with your vet. I am not a vet nor a consultant. It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you aren't sure, don't feed it to your dog!

DIY Dog Food Take One:

Hello friends!

If you are like me, you have a very picky eater at home who is a dog! Rose does not like anything outside of a cheeseburger. She likes exactly different kinds of food and both are dirt cheap which is great! However, I am always either running out, or more likely, she is going on a strike because she hates her food for a few days. It's very hard!

I have tried to make my own dog food in the attempt to always have something on hand that Rose will eat. I used very simple ingredients, and the results were...well....there is a reason that this is called take one.

Dogs can eat many different things but make sure you are not feeding them something toxic like chocolate, onions, garlic, and much more. Please see my previous blogs that outline what your dogs should never eat. If your dog has allergies, then speak to your vet before making any food for them. I am using this recipe that was recommend by a vet, but your pet's needs may vary.

You will need:

1 cup white rice
1 cup peas
1 cup lean meat
1/3 cup cut carrots (optional)

Heat and mix all together and serve. You can make a bigger batch and store in the fridge for up to a week.

I did this and presented this to Rose and here was her reaction....

So, right now, Rose is not too thrilled with this food. I am not sure why. It has been cooled to room temp and mixed well. She is super picky so I might try another type of meat like turkey to see if she will eat it. For the record, Indy stole this food from Rose about 10 minutes after this photo was taken and he loved it!

I will try another route next time and post the results!

Have a good one, Dog Moms and Dads!

Just to be clear....

Hello Fellow Dog Mom's and Dad's,

Over the last few weeks, I have gotten a few tags on Facebook about another blogger with a very similar name. I guess they had a website that has been up, but went down and now is on the way back up again. They seem to be upset because I am using this title. However... I was using this for some time now.

Well, just to be clear....

I have been doing this for awhile, at least 2 years now. The Facebook page that I have to promote this site is new and has only been up since December this year. When I searched Facebook, there was not anything similar that was titled close to my "The Modern Dog Mom." This is the first that I have seen that there is something similar.

There isn't much that I can do about this, nor do I want to since I have been using this name and happily so.  There are many several places out there with similar names, but they are not the same. Example, Burger Shake, Steak and Shake,  Top 5, Top 5 All Time, and so on and so on. If you have come to my site, I hope that you enjoy it and will keep coming back. I feel there is enough room on the internet for all of us, and I love what I do here at my blog.

Dogs are a huge part of my life and they make me happy. I want to share that happiness with you and I will continue as long as I can!

Keep coming back to this site! Everyone is welcome here!

DIY Doggie Wipes:

Hello friends,

My poor buddy, Indy gets really itchy several times a year. I don't want to constantly give him a bath because it's hard to get him in the tub, and it can dry out his skin even more. I have seen dog wipes in the stores to help with cleaning dogs between baths, and help with certain things like scent and to help relieve itching. I decided to try out my own and home instead of buying something that I am not sure about. I know I can make it cheaper than $10.00 or more. This is the first time I have attempted making this product so I am sure I will find ways to improve as I try again.

For this product, I use Skin So Soft from Avon, which I happen to sell. Yes, this is shameless, self -promotion, but I have bills to pay too! . Follow the link and search for Skin So Soft Original. There are many options. I recommend the spray bottle. Skin so Soft has been proven to help dogs with itching, and helps keep off fleas, ticks and other bugs: Follow this link to purchase:

  https://ltebrinke.avonrepresentative.com/

** Like all homemade products, anything can happen as far as a reaction. I can not tell you if this will be safe for your dog or not since every single dog is different. If you are concerned, then don't try it before speaking to your vet. I am not a specialist. This works well for my dogs, but it may not for yous.

What you need:

Skin So Soft Original:  (I recommend the Spray Bottle)
Empty with lid:  (Mason, Pickle, Jelly)
Vinegar: (any kind)
Paper Towels ( You will need some heavy duty paper towels, so stay away from the "cheap kind")
Water

1. Separate several sheets of paper towels. I used 20 but you can use more or less depending on the size of your jar. Try to see how the paper towels will fit in your jar before moving on to the second part of this step.I cut the paper towels in half for a better fit. Normally, I am all for the cheaper products, but for this, you will need a higher quality of paper towels. Otherwise you run the risk of the wipes ripping or being too soggy to even use.  After cutting the sheets in half, spray every few sheets with Skin So Soft. A small amount of this product goes a long way, so you don't need to use a whole bunch. This is oil, and it will get on your hands unless you wear gloves. It will wash off, and help your skin become softer. Bonus!

2. Roll up the paper towels in a tight roll. You do not need to put anything in the middle. If you roll tight enough, it will be easy to pull the individual piece out. Place this into your jar. You might need to smash it down a bit for fit.

3. Next, add vinegar to your water and mix together. I added several drops, but nothing more than a tablespoon. Pour the contents over the paper towels in the jar, making sure to soak the sheets.

4. Place the lid on tightly, and shake.

5. This is the finished product right out of the jar. If you take them out as quickly as I did, then you will need to ring some of the water out before use. These will store for a long time, as long as you keep a tight lid on the jar. I would shake the jar before every single use.

6. Try out on your dog! This is Indy getting his wipes used on his face. Always avoid the eye area or any sensitive parts of the skin. If you are concerned about any allergies, I would test on a small patch of the dog's hair and then wait at least an hour to see if there is any reaction. Anything can happen, so exercise caution and your best judgment for the safey of your dog!

Indy LOVES IT!!!!

This is a simple and cheap way to make your own wipes. I hope that you try this out and give me your opinion on how it works for you! What did you do differently? Did you try something new, or add another step?

Again, here is the link to my Avon page to purchase your very own Skin So Soft. This product will last you a long time, and there are many uses for it. You can get many bottles of wipes out of the amount in the bottle that your purchased.

Until next time, have a great day!

Simple Recipe Time: Rosie Yum Yums

Hello everyone,

Well, we have all been feeling awful in this household and the doggies have been working overtime with cuddles, and snuggles. As bad as I am feeling, those doggies need some treats for being so wonderful. I made Roes' favorite which is very simple, and very quick! If you aren't feeling well, this is a great recipe to make so your dogs can still have some treats and you can get it done fairly quickly. This takes about 10 minutes to prep, or less if you are fast, so here you go and I hope you enjoy!

Rosie Yum Yums:

You will need:
 One mixing bowl
 One Spoon
 Tin Foil
 Peanut Butter
Oatmeal
 Honey

Mix together:
1 cup peanut butter: either smooth or creamy. (I used creamy for this one)
1 cup oatmeal
2 tablespoons of honey

Once mixed, roll into small balls. This recipe will make 12 small sized balls. If you want more, you can double the amount, or you can make your balls smaller. Place the balls onto a bit of tin foil and place into the freezer for at least one hour. They will be ready to eat after that! Store in the freezer and use as you want. You can store them in a tight container and they will last for several months. This is also a great treat for teething dogs! The coolness will help sooth their mouths!
Take a look at the pictures as a guide! It's like a puppy truffle!

One Cup Oatmeal: Any Kind

Add one cup Peanut butter. For this, I used smooth.

Add at least 2 tablespoons of honey, any kind

Mix together all the ingredients and form into small bite sized balls.

Place in freezer for at least an hour. This is what the finished product will look like. Tastes great for puppies and doggies!
